Service Description

This course is aimed at intermediate potters and ACS members who know how to throw on the pottery wheel but are keen to learn new techniques and improve their practice. Week 1: Getting to know you Participants will take their most comfortable weight on the throwing wheel and show us what you can do! We will improve your basic throwing techniques in any way we can and provide and advice on how to handle larger amounts of clay than you're used to. We will also explore which techniques you would Week 2: Introduction to Turning This week you will refine your thrown forms from the previous week. We will practice trimming excess clay from the bottoms of pots to create attractive bases and achieve desired thickness and proportions. We will also cover trimming techniques for decorations and creating galleries for lids. Week 3-4: Advanced Techniques: Measurement, Lids, and Handles During these two weeks, participants will advance their skills by learning to measure clay accurately for consistent vessel sizes. You will also explore techniques for creating and fitting lids onto pots, as well as attaching handles securely. Week 5-8: Self-Directed Projects with Support In these four weeks, participants will have the opportunity to work on self-directed projects while receiving guidance and support from the instructor. Students will have the freedom to experiment with the throwing process and apply the techniques they've learned. The instructor will be available for assistance and problem solving on whatever project you would most like to learn. Your favourite pieces from this course will be fired and glazed for you to take home and enjoy. You will be notified by email when your work is ready to collect. Please feel free to drop by the studio over the weekends between 10am-6pm to collect your work, after you have received your email confirmation. Our studio is located in Unit 2C within the Deemouth Artist Studios courtyard. There is limited parking available at the studio on a first-come-first-serve basis.
