Service Description

This workshop is designed to introduce you to the world of Hand Building with Clay. You’ll learn the three core techniques used within hand building – pinching, coiling and slab building – and use these to create your own ceramic objects. In the first two sessions we’ll cover pinching, coiling and slab building. We'll look at ways of making objects including mugs, plates, vases, platters, butter dishes and sculptural forms. The third session will be spent working on your own project, using techniques learnt during week one and two and with support from the tutor. Your work will then be bisque fired, ready for glazing during week four. Week 1 and Week 2 - We'll cover pinching, coiling and slab building. We'll explore how to make objects including mugs, plates, vases, lidded dishes and sculptural forms. We'll cover surface decoration, looking at Sgraffito, methods of carving and slip decoration. Week 3 - You'll be working on your own project, putting to practice the techniques learnt during the first two weeks and with support from the tutor. Your work will then be bisque fired, ready for glazing. Week 4 - Starting with an introduction to glazing, you'll then have the opportunity to glaze all of your own work during this session. We'll cover the ways of applying glazes - through brushing, dipping and pouring techniques. The first 20 minutes of each session will be dedicated to demonstrating techniques, with the remaining time for practicing demonstrated techniques and working on your own projects. This course is designed for beginners. On completion of the 4-week course, participants will have built up skills to potentially be able to join the studio as a member or embark on another course to continue their learning. Our studio is located in Unit 2C within the Deemouth Artist Studios courtyard. There is limited parking available at the studio on a first-come-first-serve basis.
